31 March 2007 Pirates of the Hauraki Gulf

It is fair to say that those who failed to come along to this outrageous treasure hunt missed out an a very special event - men in tights, rum, cutlasses, parrots, men in tights, treasure chests, Jolly Rogers, bling and booty galore (did I mention men in tights...).

This was a typical "no map = no treasure" story so all those with maps made their way to Moturekareka where a rum fuelled barque, driven by an equally rum fuelled pirate, spirited (!) everyone ashore to search for the first treasure (rum).  The fee, a mere swig o' the Mount Gay (each way!!).

Then on to Mansion House Bay where crew had to wade ashore and climb the large gnarly old tree to find the second treasure (bling) in an old Jewellery Boxe.

Finally it was to Lidgards Bay and Lidgards House on Kawau Island for the evening, complete with grog and vittles and your own ships mascot (one was even alive!).

There, all those with both treasures (the rum and the bling) got to dive [in a bag] for a key to see if it would unlock one of three large treasure chests.

The outcome was three very happy boats with their pile of treasure booty.  This was followed by more happy people as the prize for best pirate, best wench, best couple and  best mascot (yes it was the live one!) were awarded.

That was the signal to flash up ye olde bar-be-que and splice the mainbrace - again!

Have a look at the pictures below and be sure to book early next time!

Note: Please be patient as there are a lot of great pictures to download

The map that started it all

Boats came from far and wide - here's Euphoria under sail.

Moturekareka looked good

Well it did until a very Willing (Wissing) Pirate appeared

Some took to the fee with a mission dedicated to Mount Gay

Others took a more sedate approach to the treasure security on the beach!

Or even a little fishing - oh and more rum mebbe?!

Someone caught a dodgy looking snake mind you - which appeared to be steering the boat to Lidgards Bay where a whole bunch of characters could be found below

Snakes, frogs, whatever next? !!!

See what you missed John Parrish!

Even the Pirate Commodore was there

So was the Motley Cru

and even the party [trans] pirate king and wench were there

as were the Black & White pirates

both of the "gloved ones" were there too!!

Even the mascot got unfrocked!

Others were already!!

Some looked a little pensive though

And some just got a little cut up about the evening

One even got beheaded at the treasure chest opening!!

See, you just had to be there
