Mid- June to Sept | Marine Education Evenings Thursdays fortnightly. Proposed topics: Understanding charts, tides & currents, meteorology, boat electrics, boat electronics, batteries and their care, sails & sail trimming, emergencies, safety equipment demonstration | Free of Charge (FOC) to members. $5/session non-members | Open to non-members. Tea, coffee & biscuits available |
June 26/27 | Coastguard Boating Education - Day Skipper course Aim: To gain essential boating and safety knowledge Duration: 15 Hours. Sat & Sun, 0830 - 1630 Qualification: Day Skipper Certificate An introductory course for all members of the family or crew, including those new to boating. Applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, PWCs, sea kayaks, and waka. | GHYC member discounted price $140 Non Club Member Price $255 | Registration and prepayment to be completed by Sunday 13 June. July 11 | In-house Introduction to Keelboats. 0900 - 1300 Basic sailing boat terminology, definitions & equipment workshop Familiarisation visit to a keelboat to identify and reinforce workshop learning | Free of Charge (FOC) | An essential part of the programme for those new to keelboats |
July/ August | Sailing 'experience' opportunity. Two-hour experience sailing on a member's boat to reinforce the workshop learning. Dates to be confirmed | Free of Charge (FOC) | The scheduled dates and times are weather dependant and may be subject to change |
September | On-water training with a professional External Supplier: Sailing Away -Suzanne Bourke 2 x 5hrs days aboard 32 ft Beneteau Oceanis Sessions run out of Westhaven, downtown Auckland, usually over one weekend. Course dates: 11/12 Sept, 18/19 Sept, 25/26 Sept | $695 pp This is the discounted rate (by $100 pp), provided 4 students attend | Student selects RYA Start Yachting/YNZ Level 1 certification & receives a logbook May increase $pp when less than 4 students |
October onwards | Mid-week evenings /weekend opportunities for sailing experiences on members' boats. The Club will build experience opportunities into the summer sailing schedule, such as alternate Wednesday evenings or some weekend days. These will not be racing, just 'experience' and a chance to meet other sailors. | FOC | Students should be considering purchasing own Personal Floatation Device (PFD) as a minimum |
