GHYC Commodore's Logbook Dec 2019

Welcome to December

I'll take the opportunity to wish everybody a very happy Christmas and New Year, now, and push the message of safe boating. We'll all be out there somewhere at some time, over the forthcoming Summer Cruising period, and so let's keep an eye out for each other. I think that Enigma1 will be on the East Coast of the North Island, maybe in the vicinity of Great Barrier Island and/or the Mercury Islands; of course, with the caveats of 'weather dependent' and Captain Sarah Morgan's wishes. Fly those GHYC pennants proudly!

I'll also take the opportunity to thank the Executive, Social and Sailing Committees, Office Staff and various Members who have stepped up to make our Sailing and Social Calendars happen that is, 'doing the stuff that allows us to do our stuff'. I gratefully acknowledge the efforts of our Sailing Series Coordinators and the Social Committee; the people who stitch it all together.

Back in Black

I acknowledge that I haven't 'been around' much lately the short answer is that 'I've been at sea in various vessels', ranging from those sleek grey types in a Training and Evaluation role (in our own waters), to a 43 metre Superyacht, in an Officer of the Watch role (in other nation's waters). If you're interested in a short story on the latter opportunity (which was a fantastic adventure), I'm up for delivering a short presentation. Let me know

Thursday 19 Dec 1700 BYO BBQ - the last event of the year, a strictly casual affair. Featuring a 'Guess Who' of members bring along a picture of yourself as a teenager or younger, hand to Beryl on arrival, and after the BBQ try to recognise your peers.

Sailing into 2020

Saturday 14 Dec 1000 - Burnsco Cruising (combined) Race 4 to Kawau. Everyone welcome to join us for a BYO BBQ and Christmas sing-along led by our music maestro Peter Cooke - song sheets provided

Twilight racing starts again from Wed 22 January 2020

Friday 24 Jan 1830 - Burnsco Cruising (combined) Race 5 a night race to Mahurangi

Saturday 25 Jan - enjoy the spectacle of the annual Mahurangi Cruising Club Regatta featuring classic wooden boats

Sunday 26 Jan 1300 - Interclub Race with Milford Cruising Club & Weiti Boating Club followed by prize-giving on the beach

Friday 6 March 0900 - Marsden Cove Race organised jointly by Richmond YC, Onerahi YC and GHYC

Race from Gulf Harbour to finish Friday evening and join the dock party at Marsden Cove Marina. All finishing boats will receive an "arrival pack" and berthage will be provided.
A great introduction to coastal racing - all yachts will run the Predict Wind Tracker so progress can be viewed on line
Saturday morning Onerahi Yacht Club will cook their big breakfast followed by prize giving in the big tent
Saturday evening returning boats meet at Kawau Yacht Club to continue race post mortems
Notice of Race will be out soon so book the date now
