YOU Travel Winter Cruising Race 1

Saturday 30 May, with sunshine and light Easterly conditions, saw the nine-strong fleet start the first race of the GHYC 2020 Winter Cruising Series.

This was also our first Club race post COVID-19 Lockdown, and so, yes, we're back up again, and into it, proper. The race: a clean start with generally an even split between the northern and southern end of the pre-set line.

Race Officer and Series Coordinator (Warren Henderson - Memphis), sent us away on Course #3; the ideal choice in the prevailing light conditions.

Having cleared the start at the southern end of the line, Share Delight worked the right hand (southern) side of the course to the first top mark (Gulf Harbour Yellow Special Buoy) whilst most of the fleet jostled on the left. The lone Farr boat delivered a lesson, and having rounded the top mark well before the trailing competitors, it was a simple case of the 'rich getting richer'.

The course was appropriately shortened, to reveal the deserved Line and Handicap winner (Share Delight) with two pairs of boats having a separate race within the race to finish just boat lengths and seconds apart. Enigma1 and Memphis battled it out for second on line (Enigma1 sneaking through) and Planet X and Glory Days had another battle for fourth and fifth on line, with Glory Days sneaking through. Meanwhile Shine-On brought up the rearguard and she was close enough to take a podium handicap position.

A pleasant and safe gathering followed back at the Club, where the war stories were shared, and the final handicap results sorted out any undeclared aspirations.

Results: Line and Handicap (Share Delight), Second on Handicap (Memphis) and Third on Handicap (Shine-On).

Photo credits to Sarah Morgan in Enigma1 who managed to fire off a few shots in between trimming, cooking, brewing coffee and steering.

We're back, and thanks to those competitors who entered and raced with GHYC today.

Best regards, John B.
