FRIDAY 20 NOVEMBER

'SEASICK' is a 2023 documentary directed and tonight presented by Simon Mark-Brown, taking a deep dive into the health of the Hauraki Gulf / Tikapa Moana.

  • The issue: The film investigates the severe ecological degradation of the Hauraki Gulf, which is facing collapse due to overfishing, bottom trawling, fine sedimentation from land clearing, and pollution.
  • Perspectives: It features marine scientists, local divers, tangata whenua, Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick, and former Environment Minister David Parker.
  • Solutions: The project highlights traditional Māori conservation concepts (such as mātauranga Māori and rahui) alongside modern marine science and community advocacy to restore the gulf.

This screening is not to be missed and also ties in well with GHYC's support for Yachting New Zealand's Moanamana project.. The film is 82 minutes long and Simon will be happy to take questions afterwards.
