Commodore's Logbook June 2019

Published 23:00 on 1 Jun 2019

Welcome to June; a short message for this month, perhaps keeping in line with my aspirations for a short period of wintry weather as we count down to the shortest day in the Calendar year and enjoy our Winter Sailing programme.

Reflections

The success of the Summer Prize Giving event still resonates with me in terms of how we celebrated our Summer Sailing programme. I feel compelled to share with you an extract from a recent formal letter…

The extract reads:

'Whilst the successful output of the evening was delivered by the combined efforts of the Executive, Sailing and Social Committees, and other willing Members; the coordination of these collective efforts by the Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore, through creative thinking, disciplined planning, and strong communication, was essential towards achieving the desired end-state for the evening'.

'You can accomplish anything in life, provided that you do not mind who gets the credit'.

'Thank you all. The credit is all yours'.

'Well done' to the Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore for leading the effort towards the success of our Summer Prize Giving event.

The International Code of Signals for "Manoeuvre Well Executed" is "Bravo Zulu". Or more simply "Well done".

CALL FOR ASSISTANCE

Having taken the opportunity to celebrate success, I will now 'reach out' for your assistance.

Succession Planning - Planning for the GHYC of Tomorrow

Working the Fourth Strategic Goal [Build and Maintain the Club Leadership Succession Plan]

Executive Committee Positions – that are under consideration or confirmed as needing reliefs:

• Commodore;
• Vice Commodore;
• Rear Commodore;
• Treasurer (Richard Endean is standing down);
• Secretary (John Bruce is standing down);
• Sailing Committee (Chair) – double hatted last two years.

Please give the above positions some serious consideration. The Club exists and prospers through the efforts of volunteers from within the Club; people who have those unique skill sets and talents, coupled with capacity and commitment. Ask not what the Club can do for you, but what you can do for the Club; the Club that is a Club of Doing.

John Butcher - Commodore, GHYC
